It tells employees what companies\u2019 goals are and how they plan to get there. It\u2019s less concerned about saying the perfect thing, and more concerned about saying what needs to be said.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"inclusive-language-in-external-communications\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inclusive language in external communications<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Using inclusive language and honoring diversity in communication should not apply only to internal communication \u2014 your external communication should also be inclusive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More specifically, inclusive language should be used in your external communication \u2014 with your customers, clients, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/third-party-business-communication\/\">third parties<\/a> in general, in cases such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your social media posts,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Job post descriptions,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marketing emails, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>General customer interactions.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"custom-btn\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/guest-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Invite external collaborators to your workplace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Diversity, equity, and inclusion should not be <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/annoying-corporate-buzzwords\/\">annoying corporate buzzwords<\/a> you are obliged to casually drop in your workplace conversations in order to sound more woke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies show that all three rightfully deserve their place in any work environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, let\u2019s take a look at some of the benefits diversity, equity and inclusion bring into a workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"dei-improves-performance\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">DEI improves performance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>McKinsey&#8217;s 2020 report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/diversity-and-inclusion\/diversity-wins-how-inclusion-matters\"><em>Diversity wins: How inclusion matters<\/em><\/a>, shows that the most diverse companies are now more likely than ever to outperform their less diverse peers on profitability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what type of diversity is analyzed, the results of this research show the same \u2014 <strong>better performance<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Companies with more than 30% women executives were more likely to outperform companies where this percentage was smaller.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Companies with more ethnically and culturally versatile executives outperformed their less diverse competition by 36% in profitability.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"banner banner-dark pumble-gradient-landing-1\">\n    <div class=\"banner-text lg:pr-[6rem]\">\n        <span However, you should consider replacing them with more neutral terms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th><strong>Instead of:<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Say:<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>\u274c Blacklist&nbsp;<\/strong>(for malicious websites)<\/td><td><strong>\u2705 Exclude<\/strong> or <strong>Deny<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>\u274c Whitelist<\/strong>&nbsp;(for safe emails)<\/td><td><strong>\u2705 Include<\/strong> or <strong>Allow<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>\u274c Black Hat&nbsp;<\/strong>(for malicious hackers)<\/td><td><strong>\u2705 Unethical hackers<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>\u274c White Hat<\/strong> (for good developers hacking to make software better)<\/td><td><strong>\u2705 Ethical hackers<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>\u274c Master<\/strong> (for main machine)<\/td><td><strong>\u2705 Primary machine<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>\u274c Slave<\/strong> (for machines controlled by the main machine)<\/td><td><strong>\u2705 Secondary machine<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"tip-3-understand-your-own-biases\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip #3: Understand your own biases<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, we are not even aware that we are unintentionally hurting others with our words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These so-called <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/microaggressions-in-the-workplace\/\">microaggressions<\/a> <\/strong>communicate some sort of unconscious bias toward historically marginalized groups.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, they are not to be confused with overt discrimination (or <strong>macroaggressions<\/strong>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/06\/08\/872371063\/microaggressions-are-a-big-deal-how-to-talk-them-out-and-when-to-walk-away\">one interview<\/a>, Kevin Nadal, a professor of psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, explains the difference between the two:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff7ea\"><em>\u201cThe difference between microaggressions and overt discrimination or macroaggressions is that people who commit microaggressions might not even be aware of them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s illustrate this with an example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you ask an American person of color where they\u2019re \u201creally\u201d from, you\u2019re performing a microaggression, and, inadvertently, causing harm to that person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such comments can create a tense atmosphere in the workplace, where people from marginalized backgrounds might not feel comfortable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The solution is to make an inclusive communication strategy and help your employees acknowledge their unconscious biases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would allow your employees to better understand and communicate with people from different backgrounds and build an <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/empathic-communication\/\">empathic<\/a> understanding of diverse identities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This leads us to our next tip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"tip-4-embrace-authenticity-and-diversity\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip #4: Embrace authenticity and diversity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Only after we become aware of our unconscious biases, can we embrace our coworkers\u2019 authenticity and our workplace\u2019s diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, we should stop viewing our colleagues as <em>\u2018other\u2019<\/em>, as Hawkins put it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He elaborates on that:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns pro-blockquote is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Dominic-K.-Hawkins.jpeg\" alt=\"Dominic K. We&#8217;re all the same people with different characteristics and our language should reflect that. For example, when referring to different races say \u2018Black people\u2019 or \u2018African-Americans\u2019 not \u2018Blacks\u2019. And, saying \u2018women\u2019 not \u2018females\u2019. If you&#8217;re ever uncertain what language to use, it&#8217;s OK to ask.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/belonging.berkeley.edu\/john-powell\">john a. powell<\/a>*, the director of Othering and Belonging Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, the antonym of <em>\u201cothering\u201d<\/em> (treating people from another group as different and generally inferior) is \u201c<em>belonging<\/em>\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>* john a. powell spells his name in lowercase in the belief that we should be \u201cpart of the universe, not over it, as capitals signify\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, make your coworkers feel they belong, instead of feeling like others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s illustrate this with an example:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Timothy chalmers is a DEI consultant in a large company. Engage with external events<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another useful tip for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in your workplace communication is to incorporate significant days for your employees in your internal communications calendar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, show your coworkers that you care about them, by raising awareness among employees of why people may be fasting during Ramadan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To increase understanding and tolerance among your employees, you can also participate in external events, such as awareness days and events such as Pride or Black History Month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the example below, Doris Hustvedt is announcing that their company will change its logo to celebrate diversity and show support for the LGBTQA+
