safe spaces for these topics to be discussed without stigma and discrimination.<br>Fortunately, the pandemic and the many narrative-changing social events and movements \u2014 such as the <em>Women\u2019s March<\/em> and <em>Black Lives Matter<\/em> movement \u2014 have helped change the discourse on the topic of mental health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We now see a slow shift in how mental health is discussed more openly not only in close circles, but also in schools, on social media, in the mainstream media, and in the workplace.<br>But before we get into the ways of addressing mental health in the workplace, let\u2019s first discuss the main workplace factors that negatively impact employee mental well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"banner banner-dark truth of the matter is \u2014 our modern workplaces are not the safest places when it comes to employee mental well-being.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the aforementioned 2021 research, a whopping 84% of respondents cited at least one workplace factor that had a direct negative implication on their mental health.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, while <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/hybrid-remote-work-models\/\" target=\"_blank\">remote and hybrid work structures<\/a> brought about many benefits and have seemingly unburdened some of the cognitive and mental load, they also introduced isolation and workaholism, along with other factors hindering the mental health of remote workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a closer look at some of the most common workplace factors that negatively affect the mental well-being of both in-office and remote workers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"factor-1-lack-of-health-and-safety-policies\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factor #1: Lack of health and safety policies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Company cultures that lack ample health and safety policies risk poor employee mental health. When employees don\u2019t feel supported, heard, and protected at work, they are bound to experience a lot of additional stress, fear, insecurity, and uncertainty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If left unaddressed for too long, these can lead to more severe mental health conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"factor-2-isolation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factor #2: Isolation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Isolation is one of the most common factors that negatively impact people\u2019s mental health.<br>According to a review of the effects of social isolation published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/rstb\/article\/370\/1669\/20140114\/22513\/Perceived-social-isolation-evolutionary-fitness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Royal Society<\/em><\/a>, mental health consequences of social isolation include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Accelerated cognitive decline<\/strong>,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Impaired executive function<\/strong>,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poor sleep quality<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Depression<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is especially evident in the remote workplace.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remote workers may enjoy the advantages of less commute and flexible schedules often connected with working from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, remote work most often comes with isolation and disconnection from coworkers and company culture as a whole.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An LCSW, CASAC, and ISTDP practitioner \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/marni-millet-lcsw-casac-1a08a011\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marni Millet<\/a> \u2014 explains how isolation and lack of connection affect the mental health of individuals, and how this can affect organizations as a result:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns pro-blockquote is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Marni-Millet.jpeg\" alt=\"Marni Millet\" class=\"wp-image-6531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Marni-Millet.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Marni-Millet-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Marni-Millet-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c<em>People are isolated, and lack of connection in the physical space with one another is leaving a void in an empathic and emotional context. Without the energy of being within 6-8 ft of each other, the opportunity to form meaningful bonds with people you work with is limited.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This can lead to people having self-doubt, rumination, and other defenses, as they attempt to make sense of themselves. When it comes to our mental health, stigma and discrimination can have even more serious repercussions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Workplace stigma and discrimination around mental health can have detrimental effects on people with lived experience of mental health conditions, a <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s12888-020-02614-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> shows.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to avoiding work and concealing their mental health condition, people with mental health conditions experience increased work stress and decreased life expectancy when faced with stigma and discrimination regarding mental health at work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"factor-4-emotionally-draining-work\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factor #4: Emotionally draining work<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Respondents in the previously mentioned 2021 study on mental health at work, cited emotionally draining work as one of the most common workplace factors that negatively affected their mental well-being.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s no surprise that even the most resilient of professionals can get overwhelmed by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Highly stressful, boring and monotonous work,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long hours, and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of meaningful work and <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/employee-recognition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recognition<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"factor-5-poor-communication\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factor #5: Poor communication<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not necessarily a groundbreaking discovery that organizations that don\u2019t prioritize <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/communication\/communication-importance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">clear, effective, and timely communication<\/a> across all levels risk plenty of serious losses, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Decreased productivity,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor team collaboration, and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A bad reputation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it\u2019s important to understand that poor communication practices also affect individuals\u2019 well-being. According to the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/clockify.me\/workaholism-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statistics on workaholism<\/a>, around 30% of the population is affected by work addiction. Some of the most common workaholism outcomes according to The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/science\/about\/psa\/2016\/04\/workaholism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Psychological Association<\/a> include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>\u201c<\/em><strong><em>Job stress<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Work-life conflict<\/em><\/strong><em>, and&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Burnout<\/em><\/strong><em>.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"factor-8-unsustainable-ways-of-working\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factor #8: Unsustainable ways of working<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly to the previous point, workplace conditions that prioritize productivity over mental well-being often have more fixed structures and rules around office hours.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This, naturally, leaves no room for a healthy work-life balance, which takes a toll on people\u2019s mental health in the long run.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although we\u2019ve seen some great improvement in this area with flexible hours and asynchronous work in a remote structure, the recent return to office orders threatens to ruin this balance.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"factor-9-discrimination\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factor #9: Discrimination<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, we still have a long way to go when it comes to creating inclusive workplace culture, despite the growing awareness and popularization of DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As recent studies have shown \u2014 3 in 5 US employees have either witnessed or experienced workplace discrimination based on age, race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.<br>According to a study by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4413914\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Library of Medicine<\/a>, the implications of workplace discrimination on employee mental well-being can be grave:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>\u201cDiminished psychological well-being,&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Increased risk of psychological distress, and<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Pronounced depressive symptoms.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"factor-10-lack-of-tangible-support-and-resources\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factor #10: Lack of tangible support and resources<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to managerial support, another huge factor in employee mental health is the amount of tangible support and resources available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it seems like we\u2019re still not there when it comes to implementing the relevant mental health services and resources and communicating these to employees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/mhanational.org\/research\/2022-mind-the-workplace-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mind the Workplace 2022 Report<\/a> by Mental Health America, less than half of respondents (47%) are aware of what mental health services they can use when they\u2019re experiencing challenges at work. Moreover, only 38% would feel comfortable using services provided by their company for mental health conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"custom-btn\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/register\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pumble makes sharing valuable resources easy<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"factor-11-job-insecurity\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factor #11: Job insecurity&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As we\u2019ve witnessed with the layoffs due to the pandemic, the fear caused by the potential loss of a job that provides the only resource of financial income increases the risks of major psychological distress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Workplace environments that don\u2019t prioritize clear and transparent communication can provide major stress and a lack of stability and security for employees.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-mental-health-challenges-affect-employees\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How mental health challenges affect employees&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although we already mentioned many of the mental health challenges employees face due to different workplace factors, let\u2019s briefly outline all the main mental health challenges in the workplace and how these affect employee well-being and performance.<br>Mental health challenges employees can experience in the workplace:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Burnout <\/strong>\u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/28-05-2019-burn-out-an-occupational-phenomenon-international-classification-of-diseases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a> defines burnout as a syndrome caused by chronic workplace stress. A <a href=\"https:\/\/infinite-potential.com.au\/the-state-of-burnout-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 study<\/a> shows over 38% of participants report experiencing all three of the symptoms of burnout.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Anxiety <\/strong>\u2014 Consistent pressure to perform, increased stress, and the inability to unplug after work (especially for people working from home) can all lead to developing anxiety. Moreover, virtual meetings can trigger <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/meeting-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meeting anxiety<\/a> with people sensitive to cognitive overload due to long hours in on-camera meetings.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Depression <\/strong>\u2014 Remote work isolation, workplace discrimination, and burnout can build up and lead to depression.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Decreased focus <\/strong>\u2014 The always-on mentality, distractions, and the pressure to wear multiple hats create a breeding ground for declining focus. A whopping 71% of respondents in the previously mentioned Mental Health America report said they struggle to focus at work.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stress <\/strong>\u2014 Chronic stress is probably the most common mental health challenge connected to workplace factors, and it\u2019s often the cause of even more severe mental health conditions.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-employee-mental-health-challenges-affect-organizations\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How employee mental health challenges affect organizations&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizations are also suffering significant consequences from poor employee mental health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These may include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Higher resignation rates <\/strong>\u2014 Toxic workplace cultures that value performance over employee support are more likely to experience higher turnover rates. Let\u2019s not forget the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/02\/01\/job-quits-resignations-december-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Great Resignation<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>phenomenon that saw 4.3 million Americans leaving their jobs in November 2021 due to poor social safety measures, isolation, and poor work-life balance. In fact, the movement doesn\u2019t show any signs of slowing down. A whopping 56% of employees surveyed by Mental Health America report having spent time looking for a new position.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Decreased performance <\/strong>\u2014 Mental health challenges affect all areas of an individual\u2019s life \u2014 from emotional and physical health, to sleep and work performance. Exhaustion and stress at work will sooner or later show up as missed deadlines, mistakes, and reduced output. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9180763\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> investigating this connection has shown a direct correlation between employee mental health and work performance.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Decreased productivity and engagement<\/strong> \u2014 Data by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/mental-health-at-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a> shows that $1 trillion is lost in productivity per year globally due to depression and anxiety. Loss of focus and motivation, in addition to decreased cognitive performance and employee morale \u2014 commonly connected to mental health struggles \u2014 will undoubtedly lead to low productivity and decreased employee engagement.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Low job satisfaction<\/strong> \u2014 People who experience mental health challenges at the workplace are less likely to feel content at their job \u2014 especially if these symptoms are left unaddressed by the individuals experiencing these and by their organization.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-to-protect-your-mental-health-at-work\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to protect your mental health at work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that we understand the importance of mental health in the workplace, let\u2019s break down some best practices on how to protect it as an employee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"tip-1-stick-to-a-routine\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip #1: Stick to a routine&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you enjoy the flexibility of remote work, you\u2019ll still need to consider creating a routine to better cope with the stress and protect your mental health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider outlining a structure for each day that includes goals, tasks, breaks, and challenges to anticipate. Do the same thing at night at quitting time. This will help demarcate your day as it does during in-person work.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If possible, create a work-only area and only do work there. The more you turn your home into an office, the harder it will be to disconnect at the end of the day.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"tip-2-take-regular-breaks\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tip #2: Take regular breaks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ever got so immersed in work that you completely lost track of time and the only thing that helped you realize this was the awful feeling of complete numbness in your legs or pain in your back?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. Remote work will do this to you. Working from the comfort of your home or some other comfy remote setup will trick you into forgetting that you still need to take breaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, it is a hop, skip, and a jump to developing burnout.&nbsp;<br>Regular 5-minute breaks to get up and stretch are simple but powerful ways to recharge, de-stress, and even get a new perspective on the task at hand. And, before you know it, you realize it\u2019s been weeks since you last saw your friends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it\u2019s not always easy to synchronize everyone\u2019s packed schedules, it\u2019s worth the effort to prioritize meaningful relationships in your life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We spoke with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/realdoctorjb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Naomi Jean-Baptiste<\/a>, emergency medicine physician and founder of <em>Hope4Med <\/em>\u2014 a mental health and wellness platform.
