However, the remaining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2022\/12\/languages-we-speak-in-united-states.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">74.82 million Americans also speak<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Spanish,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Chinese,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Tagalog,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Vietnamese, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Arabic \u2014 among other languages.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Notably, Preply\u2019s bilingualism statistics suggest that French, Korean, Russian, Hindi, German, and Portuguese are also fairly commonly spoken in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Still, American students \u2014 the future of the US workforce \u2014 tend to favor Spanish when selecting a foreign language to learn. According to a report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mla.org\/content\/download\/191324\/file\/Enrollments-in-Languages-Other-Than-English-in-US-Institutions-of-Higher-Education-Fall-2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Modern Language Association of America<\/a>, college and university students are mostly signing up to study:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Spanish \u2014 with a share of 49.42%,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">French \u2014 with a share of 11.42%,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">American Sign Language \u2014 with a share of 9.12%,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Japanese \u2014 with a share of 5.55%, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">German \u2014 with a share of 4.52%.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">This focus on the Spanish language was also confirmed by Duolingo\u2019s most recent report. Yet, interestingly, the same report showed that the second most popular course for US-based language learners was actually the English language course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"business-languages-in-the-uk\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Business languages in the UK<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">According to the data from the 2021 census, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/culturalidentity\/language\/bulletins\/languageenglandandwales\/census2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">91.1% of the UK population<\/a> speak English as their mother tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Still, the population survey showed that other than English (and Welsh, in Wales), people in the UK also speak:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Polish \u2014 1.1% of the population,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Romanian \u2014 0.8% of the population,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Punjabi \u2014 0.5% of the population, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Urdu \u2014 0.5% of the population.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Preply\u2019s report reveals a different story, showing that <strong>French is the most commonly spoken language<\/strong> in the UK other than English, with <strong>25% of the population<\/strong> speaking it, followed by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Spanish, 11%,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">German, 11%,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Urdu, 10%,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Hindi, 9%,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Punjabi, 6%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">On top of that, there were also plenty of languages spoken by less than 5% of the population \u2014 Italian, Gujarati, Cantonese, Afrikaans, Mandarin, Arabic, Portuguese, and Bengali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">As for foreign language studies, a <a href=\"https:\/\/researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk\/documents\/CBP-7388\/CBP-7388.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 brief<\/a> noted that most schools offer French, German, and Spanish classes \u2014 though the government doesn\u2019t promote the teaching of languages in any particular way. target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>lateral communication<\/strong><\/a> are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Enterprise chat message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">After all: isn\u2019t 93% of communication supposed to be nonverbal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">As impressive as this would-be factoid sounds, it is a <strong>misconception<\/strong> that has been debunked so many times, it even has a name \u2014 the <strong>Mehrabian Myth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">By all accounts, this misconception stems from a misinterpretation of Albert Mehrabian\u2019s 1967 research paper concerning the <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/1967-08861-001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decoding of inconsistent messages<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In the study, Mehrabian and his coauthor, Morton Wiener, posited that, when faced with <strong>inconsistent messaging<\/strong> (for example, when someone says something that may not be entirely truthful), people usually look for the speaker\u2019s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Body language<\/strong> (and facial expression) \u2014 at a rate of 55%, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Tone of voice<\/strong> \u2014 at an instance of 38%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In other words, only 7% of the meaning the audience absorbs in instances of inconsistent messaging comes from the actual words the speaker used to convey their message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">So, now that we\u2019ve cleared that up, what do we actually know about nonverbal communication in the workplace?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Unfortunately, nonverbal communication in professional settings hasn\u2019t been studied as rigorously as it should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Existing research, like the 2020 study on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/359815906_IMPACT_OF_NONVERBAL_SIGNALS_IN_BUSINESS_COMMUNICATION\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">impact of nonverbal signals<\/a> in business communication, are regrettably limited in scope, with researchers surveying only 150 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Still, that paper found that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">85% of the professionals surveyed believed <strong>eye contact plays a vital role<\/strong> in <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/communication\/business-communication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">business communication<\/a>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">70% said that <strong>facial expressions (like smiling) impact business communication<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">55% claimed to be able to <strong>accurately guess the emotions behind certain facial expressions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The <strong>main takeaway<\/strong> of the study was that our professional exchanges are affected by factors pertaining to nonverbal communication, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A lack of knowledge of adaptive facial signals (according to 75% of respondents),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Employers not understanding the potential of nonverbal signals (according to 70% of respondents), and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A lack of soft skills training (according to 65% of respondents) \u2014 to name a few.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forbes estimate<\/a>, the number of Gen Z workers is projected to reach 30% by 2030. But, what effect is this <a href=\"https:\/\/cake.com\/blog\/gen-z-workforce-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">influx of Gen Z workers<\/a> having on our workplace spending 43.2 hours per week on communication,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Gen Z workers are spending 39.3 hours a week,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Gen Xers are spending 34.8 hours a week, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Boomers are spending 30.5 hours per week on communication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">As expected, younger generations are also <strong>the most affected by poor workplace communication<\/strong>, with miscommunication costing Gen Zers 4.6 and Millennials 5.6 hours each week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">However, Grammarly\u2019s report also shows that the younger generations can also regain many of the hours they lost by <strong>incorporating AI tools into their communication<\/strong>, with Gen Z reclaiming 6.3 and Millennials 9.3 hours per week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Luckily, these two generations are <strong>the most open to using AI<\/strong> for professional purposes, at least according to Owl Labs\u2019 report, as the technology is already being used by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li
