class=\"translation-block\">Some <strong>practical tips <\/strong>for making that happen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">So, without further ado \u2014 let\u2019s get storied history in both the popular imagination and scientific discourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">With that being the case, we aren\u2019t able to present a single active listening definition most people stick to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">However, having researched the matter extensively, we could start by saying that active listening is, in essence, <strong>a set of techniques we might use to show that we are giving our undivided attention to our conversational partners<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Essentially, it is <strong>an attempt to understand the entire message someone is communicating, textually and subtextually<\/strong>, through <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/communication\/communication-types\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spoken or written words, nonverbal cues<\/a>, and context clues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In addition to <strong>making an effort to listen, understand, and retain the information<\/strong> we are presented with, active listening is also about <strong>finding and executing appropriate or encouraging responses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Of course, the practical aspect of this method has shifted quite drastically since its introduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">To illustrate that point, let\u2019s see what an example of active listening from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/en\/book\/show\/26715800-active-listening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carl Rogers\u2019 and Richard Farson\u2019s 1957 paper<\/a> might look like in a modern context.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"translation-block\">Nowadays, we\u2019d likely see the supervisor\u2019s words as being sarcastic \u2014 and therefore not very helpful in the face of the foreman\u2019s honest complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Luckily, this article should show a more modern approach to active listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">But first, let\u2019s see how the term fits in, or rather encompasses, a related concept we came across while researching this topic \u2014 passive listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"passive-vs-active-listening\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Passive vs Active listening<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The concept of active listening supposes that, to be a good listener, you would need to do more than <strong>simply sit there and absorb the information<\/strong> you are being presented with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Sticking to that would make you more of a <strong>passive listener \u2014 someone who doesn\u2019t provide any sort of feedback<\/strong> in response to the speaker\u2019s message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Conversely, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/36722187-interplay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ronald Adler\u2019s textbook<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/interpersonal-communication\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interpersonal communication<\/a>, <strong>mindful (or active) listening consists of five separate but simultaneous processes<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Hearing<\/strong>, which is the physiological aspect of listening, accomplished by simply not being able to ignore audio input,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Attending<\/strong>, or rather filtering through the information you\u2019re picking up and zeroing in on what really matters, based on what you\u2019re looking to gain from the conversation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Understanding<\/strong>, which requires us to read between the lines and discover the speaker\u2019s true intent and real meaning,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Remembering<\/strong> or memorizing the contents of the message through repetition, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Responding<\/strong> by giving observable verbal and nonverbal feedback to the speaker, thereby encouraging them to keep talking (or, in modern times, perhaps texting).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Yet, in order to become an expert at active listening, one must first create the right conditions for it. So, let\u2019s see what those might be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"conditions-of-the-active-listening-process\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Conditions of the active listening process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Most researchers would agree that the term \u2018active listening\u2019 came about in the early 1950s, when it became a <strong>cornerstone of humanistic psychology<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Throughout the 1940s, <strong>psychologist Carl Rogers<\/strong> worked on developing so-called <strong>person-centered therapeutic methods<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">During the course of his research, he wanted to highlight what he felt were the most <strong>crucial conditions therapists need to achieve in order to have effective sessions<\/strong> with their clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Now, even though most of us aren\u2019t looking to become psychotherapists, we can all agree that therapists can serve as an excellent example of what mindful listening looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">With that in mind, let\u2019s go through Rogers\u2019 conditions of the therapeutic process as summarized in his paper, <em>A theory of therapy, personality, and interpersonal relationships, as developed in the client-centered framework<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">To begin with, Rogers believed that <strong>effective counseling would require<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Two people, the client and the therapist, to establish <strong>contact<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">The client to be in a state of <strong>incongruence<\/strong>, vulnerability, or anxiety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">The therapist to be <strong>congruent<\/strong> in relation to the client, meaning that they have an understanding of the client.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">However, the latter three of Rogers\u2019 six conditions will be more relevant to our study of active listening. These three require the therapist \u2014 or, in our case, the listener \u2014 to have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Unconditional positive regard<\/strong> toward the client (or, rather, the speaker),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">An accurate <strong>empathetic understanding<\/strong> of the client\u2019s internal frame of reference, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">The <strong>ability to show the client proof<\/strong> that the previous two conditions were satisfied.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In other words, these conditions are about the listener\u2019s open and positive attitude and their ability to convey it to the speaker through verbal and nonverbal responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-3-as-of-active-listening\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">What are the 3 A\u2019s of active listening?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Over time, the concept of active listening, as well as the theoretical tools we use to deconstruct and understand the practice, have evolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Instead of thinking about effective listening through the prism of Rogers\u2019 therapist\/client framework<\/strong>, people tend to talk about the <strong>3 A\u2019s of active listening<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Attitude<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Attention<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Adjustment<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">After all, who doesn\u2019t love alliteration?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">At this point, you may have some inkling as to how these terms fit into what we already know about the active listening process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Still, taking a moment to examine them individually might help us gain a greater understanding of the practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"a-1-attitude\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">A #1: Attitude<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Going back to Carl Rogers and his contemporaries, we saw an <strong>emphasis on the listener\u2019s attitude toward the speaker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Having an <strong>unconditional positive regard<\/strong> for whoever is speaking is one way of <strong>making ourselves more receptive<\/strong> to what they have to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Being open-minded in this manner should <strong>prevent us from automatically judging<\/strong> the value of what we\u2019re hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Additionally, <strong>Rogers\u2019 requirement of an empathetic understanding<\/strong> forces us to place ourselves into the speaker\u2019s shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">In effect, that means that we are <strong>absorbing new information through the prism of everything we know about the speaker<\/strong> already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">To offer an overly simplistic example, when talking to a coworker who had just come back from <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/how-to-call-out-sick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sick leave<\/a>, we would naturally take that into account if they misspoke or exhibited certain nonverbal cues that don\u2019t fit into the context of the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Having this kind of receptive attitude would also <strong>prevent us from being overly reactive or interrupting the speaker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Ultimately, we must at least appear as though nothing the speaker is saying is beyond our understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"a-2-attention\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">A #2: Attention<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">As you can imagine, paying attention to what someone is saying is a crucial part of the active listening process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">However, we shouldn\u2019t only focus on the verbal (or textual) part of their communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">We\u2019ve already mentioned nonverbal cues, so this won\u2019t come as a surprise. Namely, <strong>being able to accurately interpret someone\u2019s body language<\/strong> is the key to our overall comprehension of their message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Even if you can\u2019t see someone, if you\u2019re not in an in-person meeting or on a <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/video-conferencing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video call<\/a>, you\u2019ll find a wealth of information beyond the textual part of their message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">For example, if you\u2019re on a <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/voice-calls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voice call<\/a>, you can <strong>listen to the tone of their voice<\/strong> and try to determine what\u2019s not being said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">If you\u2019re exchanging <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/features\/direct-messages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">direct messages<\/a>, you can still <strong>figure out if their texting pattern has changed<\/strong>, and if so \u2014 try to understand why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Basically, <strong>your attention should be <\/strong><strong><em>fully<\/em><\/strong><strong> focused on the speaker<\/strong>. In addition to being able to detect these subtle clues, concentrating on the person you\u2019re talking to will make them perceive you as a good listener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p listening stands for \u2018adjustment,\u2019 meaning that <strong>the listener needs to be able to adjust their response<\/strong> to the speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Basically, the listener needs to be <strong>flexible enough to follow what the speaker is saying without making assumptions <\/strong>as to what their overall point is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">That is something we\u2019ll discern by understanding the wider context and taking note of the speaker\u2019s nonverbal cues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The listener\u2019s flexibility also comes into play through the <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/blog\/remote-constructive-feedback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">feedback they offer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/232834818_Listening_Competence_in_Initial_Interactions_I_Distinguishing_Between_What_Listening_Is_and_What_Listeners_Do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some studies<\/a>, those who are considered <strong>good listeners tend to<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Ask and answer questions<\/strong> (to clarify meanings, learn more about the speaker\u2019s perspective, or encourage elaboration),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Provide reflective and relevant feedback <\/strong>(which includes paraphrasing the speaker to make sure we\u2019re on the same page),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Offer their own perspective <\/strong>by sharing similar experiences, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Respond nonverbally<\/strong> by making eye contact, nodding, and facing the speaker.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">As we can see in the image below, Ronald Adler places a number of potential listening responses on a scale going from reflective to reflective responses are a great way to show the speaker that we are paying attention<\/strong> to their story or presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Conversely, more directive responses are better suited for situations that require us to share our own opinions or advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">As we become better at active listening, <strong>we should be able to gauge which of these responses is the most appropriate for any given situation and adjust accordingly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Ultimately, <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/communication\/skills-of-effective-communicators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">developing the skills you need<\/a> to become an effective listener is sure to make you a better coworker, manager, employee, or boss!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"do-you-really-need-active-listening-at-work\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Do you really need active listening at work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">At this point, you may be asking yourself how any of this can help you sharpen your professional communication skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">And to be fair, a majority of business communication resources tend to focus almost exclusively on how you might transmit information more effectively, rather than how you can take it in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Yet, as you can imagine, <strong>communication isn\u2019t solely about stringing the right words together to get what you want<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">&nbsp;As communication expert, Susan Peterson, would put it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><em>\u201cToo many times, whether it\u2019s with email, voice mail, or [the] Internet, we are concentrating on the art of telling, not Namely, <strong>the average person talks at a speed of 125\u2013175 words per minute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">However, <strong>our brains are capable of processing up to 500 words per minute<\/strong>. If they\u2019re moving, is that because they\u2019re excited, or do they simply come from a more expressive culture?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Their paralinguistic signals<\/strong>. Does their voice sound different than usual? Are they breathing normally or taking gasping breaths as though they\u2019re rushing to get everything they need to say out?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Overall <strong>body language<\/strong>. Is it more open and relaxed or closed and tense? This could tell you whether the speaker is feeling confident or nervous as they\u2019re delivering their points.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Of course, even with all these clues, you won\u2019t be able to accurately interpret the speaker\u2019s body language without <strong>an understanding of their baseline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Does the speaker usually sway while they talk, or is that a self-soothing behavior they\u2019ve just picked up? If you don\u2019t want to forget the speaker\u2019s previous point when they jump to the next one, make a point of repeating it. After all, different occasions call for different responses.
