offer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Although Costa Rica has been a popular destination for expats and retirees since the 1990s, establishing a digital nomad visa that will regulate and legalize the stay of digital nomads was only <a href=\"https:\/\/ticotimes.net\/2021\/03\/26\/working-from-the-tropics-costa-rica-promises-digital-nomads-a-life-of-pura-vida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prompted by the pandemic-related changes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Up until the pandemic, digital nomads could only <strong>stay in Costa Rica <\/strong>by either obtaining a:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Tourist visa<\/strong>, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Rentista visa<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The <\/strong><strong><em>rentista<\/em><\/strong><strong> visa<\/strong>, which was created to allow foreign nationals to immigrate to Costa Rica, is valid for <strong>up to 2 years<\/strong>, but difficult to obtain for digital nomads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The tourist visa<\/strong>, on the other hand, is only valid <strong>for 90 days<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">That led to a lot of digital nomads being \u201cperpetual tourists\u201d in Costa Rica. They would enter the country, spend 90 days there, and then visit another country for a short period, only to come back to Costa Rica for another 90-day round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"post-pandemic-changes-in-costa-ricas-visa-system\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Post-pandemic changes in Costa Rica\u2019s visa system<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">When the pandemic hit, a lot of tourists (and some digital nomads) found themselves stranded in Costa Rica with no way out and no way of honoring the 90-day cutoff of the tourist visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">So, during the pandemic, the Costa Rica Immigration Administration issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/ticotimes.net\/2021\/03\/03\/costa-rica-tourism-extension-clarifications-and-details-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decree that allowed an extension<\/a> for all tourists who entered Costa Rica in late 2019 and early 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The extension, which was valid until June 2021, allowed stranded tourists and digital nomads to safely wait out the brunt of the pandemic within Costa Rica. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">As that deadline approached, the legislators in Costa Rica started urging the government to <strong>establish a new temporary stay visa <\/strong>that would not only allow visitors to stay for longer periods but also attract them to do so (thus replenishing the Costa Rican economy, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourism-review.com\/tourism-in-costa-rica-benefited-from-north-american-visitors-news11840\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">struggling to bounce back<\/a> after the pandemic).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">In July of 2022, that visa was brought to life in the form of the <em>Stay for Remote Workers and Service Providers Visa<\/em>. Aside from that, digital nomads can also use the:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Tourist visa<\/strong> (or the allowed 90-day stay for foreigners from countries that don\u2019t require a visa),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong><em>Rentista<\/em><\/strong><strong> visa<\/strong>, which is valid for 2 years (and can be extended) but requires them to pay tax, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong><em>Inversionista<\/em><\/strong><strong> visa<\/strong>, which requires foreigners to make an investment of at least $100,000\u2013$150,000 in Costa Rica to be granted a temporary 2-year stay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Now, clearly, digital nomads have plenty of options in Costa Rica. So, why opt for the digital nomad visa? What makes it so special?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"costa-rica-digital-nomad-visa\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Costa Rica digital nomad visa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>rentista<\/em> visa was an amazing opportunity for digital nomads to live and work in Costa Rica.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Actually, it still is.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">It allows for a 2-year stay and has minimal required earnings of $2,500. However, it doesn\u2019t offer enough benefits to attract a substantial number of digital nomads into the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">What Costa Rica needed after the pandemic was to <strong>take advantage of the <em>work-from-home<\/em> momentum<\/strong>. Approximately 35% of US employees work remotely all the time, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/collaboration\/remote-work-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pumble\u2019s Remote Work Statistics<\/a>.&nbsp;That\u2019s a lot of potential digital nomads who might find Costa Rica an attractive destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"custom-btn translation-block wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/register\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Working from home? Stay connected with Pumble<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, they might also go elsewhere. So, to attract them, Costa Rica needed something more enticing than the <em>rentista<\/em> visa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">And so, a new visa was born.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Well, the actual <em>birthing<\/em> took a bit of work, given that Costa Rica took just under a year to get the visa up and running.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">But, as of <strong>July 22nd of 2022<\/strong>, digital nomads everywhere were able to start applying for the Costa Rica digital nomad visa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"costa-rica-digital-nomad-visa-benefits\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Costa Rica digital nomad visa benefits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The Costa Rica digital nomad visa is quite like those that some other countries established during the pandemic. Similarly to <a href=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/digital-nomad-visa\/estonia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Estonia\u2019s digital nomad visa<\/a>, which was the <a href=\"https:\/\/newseu.cgtn.com\/news\/2020-07-17\/Estonia-launches-the-world-s-first-Digital-Nomad-Visa--Sb42I30bN6\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first of its kind<\/a>, the Costa Rica digital nomad visa was made to <strong>attract as many digital nomads as possible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s one of the reasons it has low requirements and quick processing times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">It seems to have worked. According to the Nomad List, Costa Rica is among the <a href=\"https:\/\/nomads.com\/digital-nomad-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most liked destinations for digital nomads<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s more, women seem to favor it more than men, probably due to the excellent safety levels in Costa Rica (which we\u2019ll discuss in detail later on). Obtaining a Costa Rica digital nomad visa isn\u2019t just about meeting a few requirements. You also need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Proof of <strong>employment outside of Costa Rica<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Proof of <strong>payment for both the application and the registration fee<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Health insurance<\/strong> (private or travel insurance that covers Costa Rica).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"how-long-is-the-costa-rica-digital-nomad-visa-valid-for\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">How long is the Costa Rica digital nomad visa valid for?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Once you get your digital nomad visa approved, you can spend <strong>1 year<\/strong> living and working in Costa Rica.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">When that year is up, you can submit a request to extend your visa for up to 1 extra year. But, it\u2019s a long way away from the <em>rentista visa<\/em>, which allows foreigners to live and work in Costa Rica for up to 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, keep in mind that the digital nomad visa has some <strong>benefits that the <\/strong><strong><em>rentista visa<\/em><\/strong><strong> doesn\u2019t<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Namely, digital nomads are <strong>completely<\/strong> <strong>exempt from tax<\/strong> (which isn\u2019t the case with the <em>rentista visa<\/em>). Therefore, considering that digital nomads pay no tax to Costa Rica, it\u2019s somewhat logical that this particular visa doesn\u2019t last as long as some others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"can-the-costa-rica-digital-nomad-visa-be-used-to-gain-citizenship-or-permanent-residence\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Can the Costa Rica digital nomad visa be used to gain citizenship or permanent residence?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re nearing the end of your working days, you might be looking into Costa Rica as a potential retirement spot. You might even be looking into working in Costa Rica as a digital nomad for a few years and then retiring there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, you wouldn\u2019t be the first one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Costa Rica is a particularly <strong>popular retirement spot for North Americans<\/strong> (specifically US citizens). in Costa Rica.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The option to apply from within Costa Rica is a major advantage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block for the Costa Rica digital nomad visa?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">To apply for the Costa Rica digital nomad visa, you\u2019ll need <strong>the following documents<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A <strong>valid passport<\/strong> (that you\u2019ll include with other documents for inspection, if you\u2019re applying in person) and a <strong>photocopy of the first page<\/strong> (which contains the biometric information and your photograph) and the page that has the stamp you received upon entry into the country,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A filled-out <strong>application<\/strong> (that you can submit online or in person),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Travel and health insurance<\/strong> (or private insurance) that covers the territory of Costa Rica (and is valid for the entirety of your stay in Costa Rica),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Proof of employment<\/strong> in a company or proof of ownership of a company that isn\u2019t registered in Costa Rica,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Proof from your employer in the form of a <strong>declaration letter<\/strong>, stating that you\u2019re allowed to work remotely from Costa Rica,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Bank account statements<\/strong> for the previous 12 months that prove that you have the necessary financial means to support yourself in Costa Rica,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Proof of accommodation<\/strong> for the duration of your stay in Costa Rica (a rental agreement, a hotel, or Airbnb booking),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Proof that you\u2019ve paid the <strong>necessary fees<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Consular or restricted visa<\/strong> (in case you\u2019re from a country that requires an entry visa).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">All documents must be <strong>verified by an Apostille<\/strong> and <strong>translated into Spanish<\/strong> (and you can\u2019t do it yourself, either, you need an official, court-approved translator) before you can <strong>register them with the authorities<\/strong> in Costa Rica.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">You also need an affidavit that states that you\u2019ve requested the bank account statements specifically to prove you have substantial income. You can\u2019t just print out your bank records to prove you have been earning $3,000 or more every month for the past year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">This process takes a while, so keep that in mind if you\u2019re planning on applying for the visa from Costa Rica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"do-i-need-to-book-or-rent-a-place-in-costa-rica-as-part-of-the-visa-application\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Do I need to book or rent a place in Costa Rica as part of the visa application?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yes<\/strong>, technically, you <em>do<\/em> need proof of accommodation for the entirety of your stay to get a digital nomad visa in Costa Rica. This proof needs to be a <strong>signed and notarized contract<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, you don\u2019t <em>really<\/em> need to have a rental agreement for the full year that you\u2019re staying. Instead, you can just submit a <strong>short-term rental or Airbnb contract<\/strong> or even sign a contract with a friend who\u2019s a local (if that\u2019s an option for you).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">As long as the contract is signed by the owner of the property you\u2019re staying at and you get it notarized, the authorities will accept it as proof of accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"do-i-need-a-costa-rica-bank-account-for-the-digital-nomad-visa\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Do I need a Costa Rica bank account for the digital nomad visa?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">A Costa Rican bank account <strong>isn\u2019t necessary<\/strong> for the visa to get approved.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Still, one of the benefits of the digital nomad visa is that all digital nomads have the option of opening local bank accounts in several Costa Rican banks with nothing but their visas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">So, you might end up getting one after you obtain your visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"can-i-apply-for-the-digital-nomad-visa-if-im-already-in-costa-rica\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Can I apply for the digital nomad visa if I\u2019m already in Costa Rica?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yes<\/strong>, you can come to Costa Rica and apply for a digital nomad visa there. In that case, you\u2019ll have to provide proof that you earn enough to sustain both yourself and your dependents (<strong>$4,000 per month<\/strong>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on who you\u2019re sponsoring, you might also have to provide some additional documentation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A <strong>marriage certificate<\/strong> that isn\u2019t older than 6 months,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A <strong>certificate of your common-law union<\/strong> that isn\u2019t older than 6 months,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A copy of a <strong>birth certificate<\/strong> (for any children that you might be sponsoring),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Medical documentation<\/strong> as proof of disabilities (for children with disabilities over 25 years of age),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Proof that the senior citizen that you\u2019re sponsoring is <strong>related to you<\/strong> (with an accompanying affidavit that confirms that).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"who-is-eligible-to-apply-for-costa-ricas-digital-nomad-visa\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Who is eligible to apply for Costa Rica\u2019s digital nomad visa?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Nationals of <strong>all countries<\/strong> are welcome in Costa Rica. Thus, everyone can apply for a digital nomad visa. As long as they meet all the requirements, they\u2019ll get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"are-you-eligible-if-you-are-a-united-states-citizen\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Are you eligible if you are a United States citizen?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yes<\/strong>, US citizens can apply for the Costa Rica digital nomad visa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">One other advantage that US citizens have is that they <strong>don\u2019t need a tourist visa<\/strong> to enter Costa Rica. Costa Rican law allows them to reside in the country for 90 days without a visa. All they need is a return ticket for either the US or another country, as proof that they won\u2019t stay longer than the allotted 90 days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"are-you-eligible-if-you-are-an-eu-citizen\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Are you eligible if you are an EU citizen?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Just like US citizens, EU citizens <strong>don\u2019t require a tourist visa <\/strong>to enter Costa Rica. Therefore, wandering digital nomads who hold EU passports can come to Costa Rica, spend up to 90 days there without any sort of visa, and then apply for a digital nomad visa, if they so wish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"are-you-eligible-if-you-are-a-us-green-card-holder\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Are you eligible if you are a US Green Card holder?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">US Green Card holders don\u2019t enjoy the same privileges as US citizens. Although they are welcome to apply for the digital nomad visa, they can do so in person only if they first get a tourist visa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">There are over <a href=\"https:\/\/embassies.net\/costa-rica-visa-exemption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">90 countries<\/a> that require a tourist visa to enter Costa Rica. US Green Card holders should check whether their country of origin is on that list, and, if that\u2019s the case, get a tourist visa to enter Costa Rica and apply for the digital nomad visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-do-i-get-a-digital-nomad-visa-for-costa-rica\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">How do I get a digital nomad visa for Costa Rica?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Obtaining a digital nomad visa in Costa Rica isn\u2019t that difficult. However, there will be a few layers of bureaucracy that you\u2019ll need to fight your way through.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">To explain the process in the simplest terms, we prepared this 5-step guide to the Costa Rica digital nomad application process for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"step-1-pick-a-method-of-application\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Step #1: Pick a method of application<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">As mentioned, there are 2 different ways you can apply for the digital nomad visa in Costa Rica:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Online, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">In-person.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re applying in person, you\u2019ll need to <strong>make an appointment first<\/strong>. To do that, you can visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/migracion.go.cr\/portal-de-citas-web\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DGME\u2019s Web Appointments Portal<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re from a country that requires a tourist visa to enter Costa Rica, applying online might be your best option. Aside from that, the online application also has the benefit of you being able to quickly get the necessary documents (especially if your visa application gets denied because of missing or incomplete paperwork).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"step-2-get-all-the-necessary-documents\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Step #2: Get all the necessary documents<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The second and most important step is to gather all the necessary documents. No matter which application method you\u2019ve chosen, it\u2019s wise to <strong>prepare the necessary paperwork for both<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s what you\u2019ll need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">An <strong>application form<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Proof of payment<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Bank statements<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Copies of your passport<\/strong> (and your physical passport),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Copy of your <strong>tourist or consular visa<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">The necessary <strong>paperwork for your dependents<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you opt to have a professional do this whole process for you, you\u2019ll need to get a power of attorney for your representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from all these papers, you\u2019ll also need to fill out <strong>specific forms you\u2019ll attach to your application<\/strong>. These forms are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><a href=\"https:\/\/migracion.go.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1-Formulario-Solicitud-de-Estancia-trabajadores-REMOTOS-Ley-10008-Publicado-05-07-2022-TRAMITE-FISICO.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stay application form for remote workers<\/a>,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A declaration that your company allows you to work remotely,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><a href=\"https:\/\/migracion.go.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Consentimiento-Informado-ene-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Proof of informed consent<\/a>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><a href=\"https:\/\/migracion.go.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/2-Formulario-Solicitud-de-Estancia-Dependientes-HIJOS-trabajadores-REMOTOS-TRAMITE-FISICO.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The dependent stay request form for minors or elderly children with disabilities<\/a>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><a href=\"https:\/\/migracion.go.cr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/3-Formulario-Solicitud-de-Estancia-Dependientes-CONYUGE-trabajadores-REMOTOS-Ley-10008-TRAMITE-FISICO.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dependent stay request form for spouses, common-law partners, adult children, or elderly adults<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">All of these forms are in Spanish (and, naturally, also <strong>need to be filled out in Spanish<\/strong>). So if your Spanish is wonky, it\u2019s best to ask someone to help you (or get a professional representative to fill it in for you).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Also, keep in mind there are two different types of forms available. One is <strong>the digital type,<\/strong> and you\u2019ll use those if you\u2019re applying for the visa online. You can do that online, via the <a href=\"https:\/\/tramiteya.go.cr\/dgme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tramite Ya platform<\/a>, or in person, in one of the Service Platforms of the Foreign Nationals Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"step-4-wait-for-the-visa-to-get-processed\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Step #4: Wait for the visa to get processed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Typically, you won\u2019t wait longer than <strong>15 days<\/strong> to hear back about the visa. If your visa has been approved for processing, you\u2019ll have 8 days to send in all the necessary paperwork that you\u2019ve gathered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">After those <strong>8 days<\/strong> are up, you\u2019ll either receive confirmation that your application has been granted or you\u2019ll be rejected. Either way, you won\u2019t wait for longer than <strong>15 calendar days<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">So, in total, you shouldn\u2019t wait longer than a month and a half or two months for your visa to be granted. This is a surprisingly quick turnaround time, especially given the world-famous laid-back approach to life that Costa Ricans typically have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"step-5-get-your-residency-permit\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Step #5: Get your residency permit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">When you get your shiny new digital nomad visa, you\u2019ll be able to enter the country and (legally) work there. You\u2019ll have <strong>3 months from the moment your visa is issued<\/strong> to get a residency permit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">This is a vital step, given that failure to get a residency permit will void your visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">To get a residency permit, you need to go to your local immigration office. However, before that, you\u2019ll need to go to San Jos\u00e9 to the <em>Ministerio Seguridad P\u00fablica<\/em> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seguridadpublica.go.cr\/tramites_servicios\/toma_huellas.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">register your biometric data<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">After you do that, you\u2019ll be able to go to the local immigration office and submit your documents there. Make an appointment at the <a href=\"https:\/\/migracion.go.cr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/migracion.go.cr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Direcci\u00f3n General de Migraci\u00f3n y Extranjer\u00eda<\/a> and bring the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A <strong>letter of request<\/strong> that details why you need a residency permit,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Two <strong>passport photos<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Photocopies of the first and last pages of your passport<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Your <strong>birth certificate<\/strong> that\u2019s been apostilled,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Proof of a <strong>clean criminal record<\/strong> that\u2019s been apostilled, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A <strong>consular registration<\/strong> that\u2019s been issued by your home country\u2019s Costa Rican consulate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from these, you\u2019ll also need to submit proof of payment for quite a few fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The first <strong>$100 fee<\/strong> is for the Costa Rican government. The second fee is <strong>$90,<\/strong> and it covers the processing and delivery of the Digital Nomad Visa (the actual document).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Once your visa is approved, you will be required to pay a security deposit \u2014 <strong>75% of the cost of a return airline ticket<\/strong> to your home country. This amount will be determined by the Costa Rica visa-issuing entity for your specific case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019d think that\u2019s it, but after arriving in Costa Rica, you will also need to pay <strong>a residency fee of<\/strong> <strong>$50<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, you are required to <strong>legally register all of the documents<\/strong> you submitted with your application. The fee for this process is usually <strong>$3.75 per page<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"can-i-live-in-costa-rica-without-a-digital-nomad-visa-while-working-remotely\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Can I live in Costa Rica without a digital nomad visa while working remotely?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Technically, yes, you can. There are several alternative options for those who can\u2019t (or don\u2019t want to) apply for the digital nomad visa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, all of them are limiting in some way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>tourist visa<\/strong>, for example, only allows you to stay in Costa Rica for 90 days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>rentista visa<\/strong>, on the other hand, allows you to work in Costa Rica but also requires you to pay income tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">And, speaking of alternatives, let\u2019s take a look at other types of visas suitable for digital nomads in Costa Rica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-other-types-of-visas-suitable-for-digital-nomads-does-costa-rica-offer\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">What other types of visas suitable for digital nomads does Costa Rica offer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you don\u2019t meet the requirements for the digital nomad visa in Costa Rica, there are a few other options you can explore. What\u2019s more, citizens of many non-EU European countries also don\u2019t need a visa. Still, there are plenty of countries that do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The tourist visa <strong>lasts for 90 days<\/strong>. To get one, you need to declare when you plan on leaving Costa Rica. You can do that by providing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A photocopy of a <strong>return flight ticket<\/strong>, bus ticket, or cruise ticket, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Proof that you have <strong>sufficient funds<\/strong> to finance your trip to Costa Rica.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, although it gives you plenty of time to explore, the tourist visa doesn\u2019t really allow digital nomads to make Costa Rica their home base. The visa is initially issued for up to two years, but it can be continually extended for up to 10 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">You can obtain it in one of two ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Prove that your monthly income is at least <strong>$2,500<\/strong>, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Deposit $60,000<\/strong> at a local Costa Rican bank, and sign a commitment letter stating that $2,500 out of that sum will be made available to you every month so you can support yourself during your stay in Costa Rica.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The benefits of the <em>rentista<\/em> visa are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">The minimal income and the sum you need to deposit don\u2019t change, no matter how many dependents you have,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">After 3 years, you can apply for permanent residency, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">After 7 years, you can apply for citizenship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The<em> Rentista<\/em> visa gives you the option to work from Costa Rica as well as access the country\u2019s healthcare and educational systems. However, it also requires you to pay 10\u201325% of income tax on all your income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"type-3-pensionado-visa\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Type #3: Pensionado visa<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Unless you\u2019re nearing your twilight years, the <em>pensionado<\/em> visa probably isn\u2019t a good fit for you. It was established to attract even more retirees from North America (and, it worked).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>pensionado<\/em> visa is <strong>fairly easy to get <\/strong>because it has only one requirement \u2014 you need to have at least $1,000 of monthly pension payments. These payments can come from social security, government, or private business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Although tempting due to the low, minimally required amount, there aren\u2019t many digital nomads who receive pension payments. Furthermore, given that the <em>pensionado<\/em> visa <strong>doesn\u2019t allow people to continue to work<\/strong>, not many digital nomads would find it that helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"type-4-inversionista\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Type #4: Inversionista<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Costa Rica offers another form of temporary residence \u2014 the <em>inversionista<\/em> visa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">This particular visa is an excellent option for investors \u2014 those who might have some money to invest and are looking to spend it in Costa Rica.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">So, if you happen to have between <strong>$100,000 and $200,000<\/strong> lying around, you can spend a day in Costa Rica, invest your money, and automatically get a residence permit for 2 years. You can invest in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Local <strong>real estate or vehicles<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>New or existing business<\/strong> in Costa Rica, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Forestry<\/strong> projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The cheapest way to obtain a residence is to invest in Costa Rica\u2019s forestry projects. If you opt to do that, you\u2019ll \u201conly\u201d need to make an investment of $100,000. However, keep in mind that this comes with a lot of paperwork.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll need to obtain appropriate permits from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.setena.go.cr\/es\/Inicio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SETENA<\/a> (Secretar\u00eda T\u00e9cnica Nacional Ambiental), a government gatekeeper agency that regulates all new developments according to their environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If that\u2019s too much of a hassle, you can also invest <strong>$200,000<\/strong> in an <strong>existing business<\/strong> \u2014 by buying the entire business or just a part of it. This is usually done by purchasing stocks of an existing business in Costa Rica. Well, it always does.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">So, let\u2019s take a look at what expenses a typical digital nomad can expect in Costa Rica (and how high each of them is).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"expense-1-rent-or-accommodation\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Expense #1: Rent (or accommodation)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Because you need an official address to qualify for your digital nomad visa, renting a place during your stay in Costa Rica is a necessity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Although it will be one of your biggest expenses, rent <strong>doesn\u2019t have to be astronomically high<\/strong>. Just like anywhere else, the amount of money you spend on accommodations in Costa Rica will depend on your needs and desires.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">So, if you want a 4-bedroom house with a pool, you\u2019ll have to pay a pretty penny for it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">But, you can also find something quite cheap, especially away from the city center. Booking accommodations during the high season \u2014 from October to April \u2014 can be tricky. High season means <strong>high prices and low availability<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">So, if you can, opt to look for accommodation during the low season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also important to remember that small, <strong>rural areas will always have lower rent<\/strong> than coastal towns that are popular tourist destinations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"expense-2-utilities\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Expense #2: Utilities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Although rent can be quite steep (especially if you opt to settle down in a city center or a seaside resort town), the good news is that the price you pay will <strong>most likely include the utilities<\/strong>. That\u2019s especially true for short-term rentals and vacation homes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">To register utilities for your new apartment, you need to be a <strong>legal resident of Costa Rica<\/strong>. That\u2019s why many landlords keep the utilities registered in their own name and just include them in the final rent price. That way, they can rent out their real estate to foreigners who aren\u2019t on a visa as well as tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">All utilities are <strong>billed one month behind<\/strong>, so you won\u2019t have to pay them the first month you move in. On the other hand, it\u2019s cheap. However, you\u2019ll only find Uber vehicles in a couple of major cities. Unfortunately, Uber still <a href=\"https:\/\/qcostarica.com\/bill-to-regulate-uber-didi-and-indrive-will-be-presented-at-the-end-of-the-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hasn\u2019t been entirely regulated<\/a> in Costa Rica (even though it\u2019s been around for years). So, don\u2019t expect it to be available at every corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"catching-the-bus\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Catching the bus<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Luckily, even if you can\u2019t find an Uber, you won\u2019t be left stranded. Although a bit disorganized, the Costa Rican bus system connects pretty much the entire country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, you will probably have some trouble finding the main transportation hub or a central station\u2014 namely because there isn\u2019t one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, there are <strong>a couple of bus terminals in major cities<\/strong> that serve as hubs for the major bus companies (all of which are privately owned). San Jos\u00e9, for example, has 2 hubs like that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">The <strong>Gran Terminal Caribe<\/strong> (Los Caribenos), and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/ticotimes.net\/2021\/11\/07\/what-does-a-street-address-look-like-in-costa-rica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Coca-Cola<\/strong> one<\/a> (just ask for it; everyone will know what and where it is).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re taking the bus, pay attention to whether you\u2019re on a <em>Directo<\/em> or <em>Colectivo <\/em>bus. The <em>Directo<\/em> bus goes from point A to point B without stopping, while the <em>Colectivo<\/em> bus stops at smaller cities and villages along the way to pick up more passengers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"hailing-a-cab\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Hailing a cab<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to travel around Costa Rica in a taxi, you\u2019ll probably get to your destination much quicker than you would with a bus. Buses are cheap, but they also often avoid major highways and make a lot of stops along the way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Taxis are <strong>readily available and cheap<\/strong>. However, that\u2019s only true if you manage to hail an authorized taxi, also known as a <em>rojo<\/em>. All of these <a href=\"https:\/\/news.co.cr\/why-are-taxis-painted-red-in-costa-rica\/28731\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">taxis are red<\/a> and have a yellow triangle printed on the doors, so you\u2019ll easily recognize them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you do opt for traveling around in a taxi, here are a few tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Always ask the driver to turn on \u201cla Maria\u201d \u2014 <strong><em>la Maria<\/em><\/strong> is the meter that\u2019s usually mounted onto the dashboard or the visor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">If you\u2019re going on an inter-city trip, <strong>negotiate the full price in advance<\/strong>. For example, if you\u2019re traveling from San Jos\u00e9 to Manuel Antonio National Park, negotiate with your driver whether you\u2019ll pay $200 or $230 for the entire trip (it shouldn\u2019t cost more than that).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Although taxi drivers will <strong>gladly accept dollars<\/strong> (unlike bus drivers), it\u2019s important to pay with small bills. Taxi drivers usually won\u2019t be able to break anything larger than a $20 bill.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"expense-4-groceries\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Expense #4: Groceries<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Ticos spend quite a <strong>big chunk of their monthly earnings on groceries<\/strong>. An average bottle of wine is around $12, while imported beer is around $4.50.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"expense-5-restaurants-cafes-and-bakeries\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Expense #5: Restaurants, cafes, and bakeries<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Typically, you\u2019ll find food at any price in Costa Rica. From the <em>casado<\/em> and <em>gallo pinto<\/em> corner shops to Michelin-star restaurants, there\u2019s something for everybody in Costa Rica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Prices vary depending on what and where you eat. Generally speaking, expect to spend around <strong>$10 per meal<\/strong> at a cheap restaurant and around <strong>$60 per meal<\/strong> at a high-end place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">There are several things you need to pay attention to when eating out or going on a night out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">The \u201cgringo tax\u201d \u2014 the <strong><em>gringo tax<\/em><\/strong> refers to inflated prices that foreigners and tourists get served in popular, touristy areas. If you enjoy dining in restaurants in the most popular tourist spots in the county or bar hopping from hotel bar to hotel bar, then you\u2019ll probably find yourself paying the <em>gringo tax<\/em>. Home Internet in Costa Rica tends to be faster than those available in public places. They live a stress-free life and lean heavily on community and family. The economy that\u2019s continually growing stabilizes the country and strengthens its workforce, leading to lower levels of unemployment and crime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">On top of that, Costa Rica has a 98% literacy level, the highest in all of Central America. So, Ticos are educated and intelligent, which also helps bring crime levels down.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, Costa Rica can still improve when it comes to overall safety. But, as mentioned, it\u2019s at the very top of the list of places to visit for female digital nomads (even solo travelers), which speaks volumes about how safe people feel in Costa Rica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Costa Rica is also <strong>fairly LGBTQ+ friendly<\/strong>. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equaldex.com\/region\/costa-rica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LGBTQ+ Equality Index<\/a>, Costa Rica scores 66 points. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2020\/05\/26\/costa-rica-first-central-america-legalize-same-sex-marriage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legalized gay marriage<\/a> back in 2020 and is steadily working on becoming even more LGBTQ+ friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"benefit-4-flexible-currency\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Benefit #4: Flexible currency&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Costa Rica has its own national currency, the <strong>Costa Rican Colon (\u20a1)<\/strong>. One dollar is worth around 512.51 CRC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Now, we know what you\u2019re thinking \u2014 that seems like you\u2019ll be doing a lot of math in the future. If one pound of bananas costs \u20a1405, then that means you\u2019ll pay $0.79 for them, right? Converting the cost of one pound of bananas shouldn\u2019t be that hard, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Well, it isn\u2019t, but Costa Ricans make it even easier. The dollar is accepted as an <strong>unofficial currency <\/strong>pretty much anywhere. You can negotiate prices in dollars, pay in dollars, and generally live your life as if the Costa Rican Colon doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">That is, of course, until it\u2019s time to interact with government officials or any sort of public figure. So, you\u2019ll have to pay for your bus fare in CRC as well as the fee for your visa. However, that\u2019s pretty much it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The infrastructure in Costa Rica leaves a lot to be desired. One of the main benefits of the Costa Rica digital nomad visa is that you can use your driver&#8217;s license for the duration of your visa. However, given how <strong>generally unsafe roads are in Costa Rica<\/strong>, we\u2019re not sure you\u2019re going to want to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The roads are full of holes, badly marked (or not marked at all), and not well-lit. That\u2019s probably why the main cause of injury or death in Costa Rica are traffic accidents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"drawback-2-unsafe-local-drivers\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Drawback #2: Unsafe local drivers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from unsafe roads, Costa Rica also has unsafe drivers. Costa Rica is among the top 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/gps.com.au\/most-dangerous-countries-to-be-a-driver-world-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unsafest countries to be a driver in<\/a>. It ranks 4th, just below Colombia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re from a country that is particular when it comes to road safety, then you\u2019ll probably find the local driving not only unacceptable but also ludicrous.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, if you\u2019re from (or have been to) an Asian country like Vietnam or India, then the driving conditions in Costa Rica won\u2019t seem as dangerous or uncommon to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"drawback-3-the-other-side-of-the-pura-vida-coin\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Drawback #3: The other side of the <em>pura vida<\/em> coin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>pura vida<\/em> is an amazing thing to experience and try to strive towards. However, there\u2019s another side to the <em>pura vida<\/em> lifestyle that foreigners might find difficult to deal with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Because Costa Ricans are so laid-back, they are used to handling things slowly and at their own pace. In reality, that means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">The government (and health) <strong>lines are always long<\/strong>,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">People are often <strong>late everywhere<\/strong> (even in a professional setting), and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Businesses offer <strong>slow service<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll never see Ticos rushing, red in the face, scrambling to make something happen. On average, Costa Rica will see about <strong>100 inches of rain<\/strong> (but that can go up to <strong>25 feet in the mountains<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">So, if you plan to stay in Costa Rica during the wet season, prepare your umbrella.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, keep in mind that the locals call this season the green season and absolutely adore it. It\u2019s the time when Costa Rica is at its <a href=\"https:\/\/costaricaexperts.com\/costa-rica-travel-blog\/best-time-to-visit-costa-rica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">greenest and lushest<\/a> (also, with as few tourists as possible). You can explore the entire country from it with day or weekend trips.
