That makes it a perfect choice for everyone who wants to enjoy the perks of the Union without paying a small fortune for it and also explains (in part) why digital nomads love it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">So, let\u2019s see which requirements a digital nomad has to meet in order to obtain a Croatian visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"croatia-digital-nomad-residence-permit\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Croatia digital nomad residence permit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Developed with input from digital nomads, the Croatia digital nomad residence permit allows digital nomads to <strong>live and work in Croatia for up to a year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, it does have a couple of stipulations and requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Firstly, the permit that Croatia offers is only available to digital nomads.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Republic of Croatia <a href=\"https:\/\/mup.gov.hr\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ministry of the Interior<\/a>, a digital nomad is:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>A third-country national (this means a non-EU\/EEA\/Swiss citizen) who is employed or performs work through communication technology for a company or his own company that is not registered in the Republic of Croatia and does not perform work or provide services to employers in the Republic of Croatia<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">To translate this into regular people talk, the Croatia digital nomad visa requirements are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">You need to be a citizen of a <strong>country that isn\u2019t a part of EU\/EEA (or Switzerland)<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">You need to be able to work remotely (by using <strong>communications technology like the Internet<\/strong>), and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">You need to work for a company or own a company that <strong>isn\u2019t registered in Croatia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from that, you\u2019ll also need proof of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Travel insurance<\/strong> that covers the duration of your stay in Croatia,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Substantial finances<\/strong>, which give the government insight into your earnings for the past 6 months and prove that you earn at least \u20ac3,295 (~$3,749.94) per month or, alternatively, that you already have at least \u20ac39,540 (~$45,010.59) in your bank account if you\u2019re staying for 12 months or \u20ac59,310 (~$67,515.88) if you\u2019re staying for 18 months,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A <strong>clean criminal record<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A <strong>residence address in Croatia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Although quite straightforward at first glance, in practice, the process of getting the Croatia digital nomad visa residence permit can be somewhat convoluted. Digital nomads who want to apply are often left with a lot of questions that seemingly don\u2019t have answers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Well, fret not, because we have them and we\u2019ll provide some of them below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"how-long-is-the-croatia-digital-nomad-visa-valid-for\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">How long is the Croatia digital nomad visa valid for?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Once approved, the Croatia digital nomad visa (or a residence permit) allows you to <strong>stay and work in Croatia for up to 1 year.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">After that year is up, you can\u2019t just renew your visa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the Croatian law demands that you <strong>leave Croatia for at least 6 months<\/strong>. There has to be at least 6 months between the day your permit expires and the day you apply for a new one. So only after those 6 months are up can you try to get a new permit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">But do you really have to leave Croatia the day your residence permit expires?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">That depends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If your permit expires and you <strong>still haven\u2019t used up your allotted 90 days that you can spend in the Schengen area visa-free<\/strong>, then you can stay in Croatia for those additional 90 days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, after that, you\u2019ll have to leave not only Croatia but the entire Schengen Area, since one can\u2019t stay in the Schengen Area for more than 90 days in a 180-day period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">A digital nomad who was a permit holder and spent some time in 2023 in Split, Croatia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/natalia_ivanikova\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Natalia Ivanikova<\/a>, cites this as one of the few issues that the Croatia digital nomad visa has.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns pro-blockquote is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"377\" src=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/NataliaIvanikova-1.jpg\" alt=\"Natalia Ivanikova\" class=\"wp-image-2495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/NataliaIvanikova-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/NataliaIvanikova-1-300x283.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/NataliaIvanikova-1-13x12.jpg 13w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe fact that we can\u2019t renew the visa is probably one of the biggest drawbacks of the Croatia digital nomad permit. It\u2019s only valid for 1 year. Aside from that, the visa restricts you from traveling abroad \u2014 you can\u2019t be outside of Croatia for more than 90 days in total during the year your visa is valid for and yor trips abroad can\u2019t be longer than 30 days. But, this visa was never created to be a long-term visa for people on a path to Croatian citizenship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/mup.gov.hr\/aliens-281621\/stay-and-work\/long-term-residence-and-permanent-stay\/281682\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Croatian Law on Foreigners<\/a>, to qualify for permanent residence that will eventually allow you to get citizenship, you must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Spend 5 continuous years in Croatia, and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Spend no more than 10 months outside of Croatia during those 5 years.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The stipulations of the digital nomad visa (which demand you leave Croatia for 6 months after your residency permit expires) clearly <strong>block any attempts for permanent residence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">But, that\u2019s not necessarily a bad thing because it\u2019s, in part, what allowed the rest of the requirements to be somewhat straightforward. By removing the possibility of extension, the government essentially removed several layers of bureaucracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">This is an excellent thing because, as you\u2019ll probably find, dealing with the Croatian bureaucracy is a daunting task.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">We spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/andreaewoods\/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andrea Woods<\/a>, a Canadian digital nomad who first visited Croatia on a tourist visa in 2020. Since then, she\u2019s had 2 digital nomad residency permits granted by the Croatian government. We\u2019ve stayed in Dubrovnik both times, but we\u2019ve had to visit several different police stations to get all of our papers in order. It seems as though each police station has different requirements for foreigners who are trying to register an address or apply for the digital nomad residency permit. There\u2019s very little consistency when it comes to what you actually have to do and, even though there are specific requirements for the visa, you might have to deal with different demands depending on where you\u2019re staying<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"what-documents-do-i-need-for-the-digital-nomad-residence-permit\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">What documents do I need for the digital nomad residence permit?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">There are 3 different ways you can apply for the Croatia digital nomad visa:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalnomadscroatia.mup.hr\/Pages\/Zahtjev2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Online<\/a>, from abroad or from Croatia if you <strong>don\u2019t need an entry visa<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">By submitting an application in a <a href=\"https:\/\/mvep.gov.hr\/embassies-and-consulates\/embassies-of-the-republic-of-croatia-in-the-world\/244601\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Croatian consulate or embassy<\/a> if you <strong>do need an entry visa<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">By visiting a local police station in Croatia.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">This is actually one of the major advantages of the Croatian digital nomad visa. The fact that I could apply online and wait for the visa to get approved from within Croatia made me decide on it as my next destination. As far as I know, Croatia is the only European country where that\u2019s possible. Plus, when compared to some other countries, the list of required documents is much shorter as well as understandable and convenient.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">So, the option to apply online is a big hit among digital nomads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">But, no matter which option you choose, you\u2019re going to need the same, specific set of documents. But don\u2019t worry \u2014 as Natalia said, there aren&#8217;t that many of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most important things to remember is that if you\u2019re applying online, all of your documents need to be <strong>submitted in PDF form<\/strong>. If they aren\u2019t, they\u2019ll most likely be rejected and you\u2019ll be forced to repeat your application (or, at the very least, resend the documents).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"documents-to-include-in-your-application\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Documents to include in your application<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Your Croatia digital nomad visa application should include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A <strong>completed <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalnomadscroatia.mup.hr\/Pages\/Zahtjev2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>application form<\/strong><\/a>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A <strong>copy of your passport<\/strong> or another valid travel document, which must be valid for at least 3 months after your stay in Croatia is finished,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Proof of <strong>travel or private health insurance<\/strong> (from a company that covers the territory of the Republic of Croatia),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Proof of purpose<\/strong> \u2014 a contract or another official document that proves that you are able to conduct your work for a non-Croatian company (yours or owned by a third party) by using communication technology,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Proof of means of subsistence<\/strong> \u2014 proof that you either earn more than \u20ac3,295 (~$3,749.94) per month or that you have more than \u20ac34,440 (~$38,095.98) in your bank account for a 12 month stay, or \u20ac59,310 (~$67,515.88) for an 18 month stay,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Proof that you haven\u2019t been convinced of any criminal offenses<\/strong> in your home country or in a country in which you have been living for a year or more prior to arriving in Croatia, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Proof of accommodation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"what-to-include-as-proof-of-purpose-for-the-croatia-digital-nomad-visa\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">What to include as proof of purpose for the Croatia digital nomad visa<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Proof of purpose demonstrates to the Croatian government that you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Are a digital nomad who is able to conduct work through communication technology,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Work for an employer or employers who aren\u2019t registered as a company in Croatia, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Own a company which isn\u2019t registered in Croatia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">As proof of purpose, you can submit one of the following documents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A signed, <strong>official statement from your foreign employer<\/strong> that proves that you have the permission to work remotely (by using communication technology),&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A <strong>contract of employment <\/strong>or service with an employer who isn\u2019t registered in Croatia (so, a foreign employer), or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A copy of the <strong>registration of your own company<\/strong>, if you\u2019re providing services for clients through your own company. The company you own can\u2019t be registered in Croatia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s always better to have more documents than you need than fewer. You must provide <a href=\"https:\/\/mvep.gov.hr\/services-for-citizens\/consular-information-22802\/legalization-of-documents\/22810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legalized documents<\/a> from your home country or the country in which you were a resident for at least a year prior to arriving in Croatia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">These documents have to be <strong>authenticated in accordance with the regulations of the country of their origin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re from the US, you\u2019ll need to get a federal background check from the FBI (not one from the state you\u2019re originally from).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">US citizens can receive their background check in one of 2 ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Electronically<\/strong> <strong>via email <\/strong>\u2014 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edo.cjis.gov\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">submitting a form online<\/a>, getting their fingerprints taken in any post office in the US, and receiving their background check via email, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Via First-Class Mail (US Postal Service) <\/strong>\u2014 by filling an <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.fbi.gov\/cjis-ucr\/identity-history-summary-checks-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">online application<\/a>, submitting fingerprints online, and receiving their background check via physical mail.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind that the validity of the FBI background check expires after 6 months, so time it right when applying for the digital nomad visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"how-to-deal-with-potential-background-check-issues\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">How to deal with potential background check issues<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The law regarding this particular requirement isn\u2019t exactly clear. Getting the background check from overseas is the most laborious part of the process. What\u2019s more, it can oftentimes be completely nonsensical. That company digitized the prints and sent them to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police so they could check them and send them to the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who then sent them to the embassy of Croatia in Canada who finally emailed the documents back to me in Croatia<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s quite a runaround.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">So, if you\u2019re planning on applying for the visa from any other country than your own, be prepared to jump through some hoops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"do-i-need-to-book-or-rent-a-place-in-croatia-as-part-of-the-visa-application\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Do I need to book or rent a place in Croatia as part of the visa application?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yes<\/strong>, as proof of accommodation is one of the necessary documents that you\u2019ll need to apply for the visa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">For proof of accommodation, you need to provide the authorities with a <strong>valid Croatian address<\/strong>. The address can be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Permanent<\/strong>, in which case, you\u2019ll need to provide proof of booking or a rental agreement, or&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Temporary<\/strong>, in which case they\u2019ll need proof of booking from your hostel or hotel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The address is a necessity because, based on your address, you\u2019ll be <strong>assigned to a local police station <\/strong>that has jurisdiction of the area. They will be in charge of processing your application on a local level.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you opt to apply with a temporary address (like a hostel or a hotel booking), know that <strong>you\u2019ll have to get a permanent address once your residence application gets approved<\/strong>. You\u2019ll need to supply the authorities with a notarized contract that proves you have a permanent place to stay for the duration of your visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind that booking a place might be more difficult than you\u2019re used to. You can open one, but all the authorities really need from you are documents that prove you have enough money to sustain yourself in Croatia for the duration of your stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"can-i-apply-for-the-digital-nomad-visa-if-im-already-in-croatia\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Can I apply for the digital nomad visa if I\u2019m already in Croatia?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yes<\/strong>, there is an option to apply while you\u2019re in Croatia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Quite a few digital nomads opt to go this route and arrive in Croatia as tourists or on a type-D visa (of which we\u2019ll talk more later on) only to apply for the digital nomad residence permit later on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, keep in mind that <strong>this could potentially be risky<\/strong>. They don\u2019t have to apply for the digital nomad visa separately, as you can include their documents along with your application.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">For each family member that you apply with, your <strong>minimum income requirement will increase by 10%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Under the Croatian law, immediate family members are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Spouses<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Common law partners<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Minor children<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you apply along with your family members, aside from the standard documents that are required, your application must also include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A <strong>marriage certificate<\/strong> for your spouse,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">An extract from the <strong>birth register<\/strong> or proof of adoption for each minor child, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Proof of a civil union <\/strong>(if applicable).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind that Croatia has some specific requirements regarding what can and can\u2019t be classified as a \u201ccommon-law partner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"how-can-i-apply-with-my-common-law-partner\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">How can I apply with my common-law partner?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">To be able to apply with your common-law partner, you must be with them for <strong>at least 3 years<\/strong> (shorter if you have a child together, in which case, you\u2019ll have to provide that child\u2019s birth certificate, even if you aren\u2019t including the child on the application).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, your common-law partner can only come to Croatia with you if you can provide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">An <strong>extract from the register<\/strong> of common-law partnerships,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A <strong>statement<\/strong> by both you and your partner regarding your shared life together,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Statements from witnesses<\/strong> who can confirm that you\u2019re actually partners and that you\u2019ve been together for at least 3 years,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Proof that you\u2019ve been living together <\/strong>in Croatia or any other country for at least 3 years prior to applying for the visa, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Any other proof that you\u2019re in a common-law partnership and that you\u2019ll continue to live together once you arrive in Croatia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, you don\u2019t actually need to provide <em>all<\/em> of these documents. If you\u2019re in a registered common-law partnership, then all you really have to do is prove that, just like you\u2019d prove a marriage with a marriage certificate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, it\u2019s important to keep in mind that all these documents need to be <strong>valid according to the Croatian standards<\/strong>. Citizens of these areas and countries don\u2019t have to apply for the digital nomad visa, since they already have the right to live and work in Croatia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, citizens of the EU\/EEA\/Switzerland can apply for residency in Croatia. There are two different types of residency available to them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Short-term residency<\/strong> \u2014 that regulates their stay for up to 90 days, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Temporary residency<\/strong> \u2014 that regulates their stay for more than 90 days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Digital nomads from other countries need to apply for the digital nomad visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"are-you-eligible-if-you-are-a-united-states-citizen\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Are you eligible if you are a United States citizen?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yes<\/strong>, US citizens can apply for the Digital Nomad Visa. Just like the members of the EU\/EEA\/Switzerland, citizens of the US can enter Croatia without a visa no matter what their purpose of travel is and spend up to 90 days there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, almost all North American, South American, and European citizens (except citizens of Russia and T\u00fcrkiye) are allowed to enter Croatia and stay for up to 90 days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, citizens of many Asian countries cannot enter the county without a visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Check out this handy <a href=\"https:\/\/embassies.net\/croatia-visa-exemption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Visa exemption map<\/a> for Croatia to see whether or not your country requires an entry visa for Croatia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"are-you-eligible-if-you-are-a-us-green-card-holder\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Are you eligible if you are a US Green Card holder?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">All citizens of non-EU\/EEA countries can apply for the Croatia digital nomad visa. However, some might not be able to enter Croatia and apply from within the country <strong>without first obtaining a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mvep.gov.hr\/services-for-citizens\/consular-information-22802\/visas-22807\/visa-requirements-overview-22879\/22879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>D-type visa<\/strong><\/a> (short-term stay visa or a temporary stay visa).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">There are a few exceptions though.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">For example, if you\u2019re a third-country national that holds certain <strong>valid documents that were issued to you by a Schengen member state<\/strong>, then you won\u2019t need a D-type visa for Croatia. These documents are usually either residency permits or C-type visas issued by a Schengen member state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, if you are a third-country national that holds a <strong>Bulgarian, Romanian, or Cypriot visa<\/strong>, you won\u2019t need a Croatian visa for a stay shorter than 90 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-do-i-get-a-digital-nomad-visa-for-croatia\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">How do I get a digital nomad visa for Croatia?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Obtaining a Croatia digital nomad residence permit isn\u2019t easy. If you don\u2019t need a visa to enter Croatia, you can apply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Online<\/strong>,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">In a <strong>Croatian consulate or embassy<\/strong> in your home country, or&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Directly in Croatia<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If, however, you do need a visa to enter Croatia, you must apply either in a consulate or embassy or online.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re applying in a consulate or embassy, make sure to call them and check on the current requirements. As mentioned, rules and minute requirements can change from consulate to consulate, so make sure you know what yours will demand from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"step-2-gather-all-the-documents\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Step #2: Gather all the documents<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Gathering the necessary documents will take time. If you\u2019re already in Croatia and are applying for the Digital Nomad Visa during your 90-day visa-free stay, keep in mind that some documents <strong>might take longer<\/strong> than others to arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The FBI criminal background check, for example, takes a few weeks or even more than a month to arrive via mail to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"step-3-pay-the-application-fees-and-submit-your-application\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Step #3: Pay the application fees and submit your application<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">After you\u2019ve ensured that you have all the documents (<strong>translated and notarized<\/strong>), you can submit your application online or in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re doing it online, remember that all your documents <strong>must be in PDF form<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Those who apply in person should remember to make extra copies of their documents beforehand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The application fees differ depending on the method you\u2019ve chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve applied <strong>through a consulate or embassy<\/strong> or <strong>online<\/strong>, you\u2019ll have to pay:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">\u20ac55.74 (~$63.45) for the temporary stay permit,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">\u20ac93 (~$105.87) for a D-type visa (if you need it), and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">\u20ac41.14 (~$46.83) for the biometric residence card.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve applied <strong>directly at a police station<\/strong>, you\u2019ll have to pay:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">\u20ac46.45 (~$52.88) for the temporary stay permit,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">\u20ac31.85 (~$36.25) for the biometric card, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">\u20ac9.29 (~$10.57) for the administrative fees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"step-4-wait-for-the-application-to-get-processed\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Step #4: Wait for the application to get processed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The Croatian government states that the waiting period typically <strong>doesn\u2019t last more than 3\u20134 weeks<\/strong>. In extreme cases, it can take up to 12 weeks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, Ivanikova says that the visas rarely get processed that quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns pro-blockquote is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"377\" src=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/NataliaIvanikova-1.jpg\" alt=\"Natalia Ivanikova\" class=\"wp-image-2495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/NataliaIvanikova-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/NataliaIvanikova-1-300x283.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/NataliaIvanikova-1-13x12.jpg 13w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cNo one I know got the visa in less than 3 months. It doesn\u2019t matter where people applied \u2014 in one of the coastal cities or in Zagreb \u2014 they all waited for 3 or more months. In my case, I applied online on the 24th of July and arrived in Split on the 13th of August. I received the approval on the 10th of November, but got the physical residency card on the 25th of November.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s quite the wait.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, waiting to get your visa processed and approved doesn\u2019t have to be that big of an issue, as Ivanikova noted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns pro-blockquote is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"377\" src=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/NataliaIvanikova-1.jpg\" alt=\"Natalia Ivanikova\" class=\"wp-image-2495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/NataliaIvanikova-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/NataliaIvanikova-1-300x283.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pumble.com\/learn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/NataliaIvanikova-1-13x12.jpg 13w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\"><em><em>\u201cIf you apply for the digital nomad residency permit in person in Croatia or come as a tourist after you\u2019ve applied online to wait for the visa to get approved, you can go to the nearest MUP (the police office) and ask them for an official paper stating that your visa documents are under review. With that paper, you can legally stay in Croatia even if your tourist visa or whatever visa you used to get in Croatia expires. However, that paper doesn\u2019t allow you to travel outside Croatia.\u201d<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">So while you can wait for the visa to be approved from within Croatia, you can\u2019t really use that time to backpack across Europe, it seems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019ve applied online or in a consulate, you\u2019ll receive an email when your application gets processed. If you\u2019ve applied in person, you\u2019ll most likely get a call or an SMS to the Croatian number you provided during the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Your chances of getting the Croatia digital nomad visa are fairly decent. If you don\u2019t need a visa to enter Croatia, you can simply go and enter the country without an issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If, however, you do need a visa, you will need to apply for a D-type visa that allows you to enter Croatia multiple times over a period of 6 months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s actually smart to apply for this visa at the same time as for the digital nomad residency permit, so you don\u2019t have to wait for 2 visas. That way, you will be able to head down to Croatia immediately after your D-type visa is approved and wait for your digital nomad residency permit there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"step6-register-a-temporary-address\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Step#6: Register a temporary address<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Once you arrive in Croatia, you\u2019ll have <strong>3 days<\/strong> to register a temporary address. To do that, you\u2019ll have to go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/policija.gov.hr\/policijske-uprave\/104?big=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearest police station<\/a> (MUP). There, you will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Fill out <a href=\"https:\/\/mup.gov.hr\/UserDocsImages\/dokumenti\/stranci\/2013\/Obrazac%208a.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Form 8a<\/strong><\/a> (called <em>Obrazac 8a<\/em> in Croatian), and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Present <strong>proof of accommodation<\/strong> (a rental agreement or a booking confirmation).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you only have a temporary address (as in, a short hotel or hostel booking), don\u2019t worry. You can always change the address later by doing the same process again at the nearest police station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"step-7-apply-for-the-biometric-residence-card\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Step #7: Apply for the biometric residence card<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, the last step of the process is to <strong>apply for the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mup.gov.hr\/aliens-281621\/stay-and-work\/biometric-residence-permit\/281683\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Biometric Residence Permit<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> This permit (or a card) is necessary for all digital nomads who intend to stay in Croatia longer than 3 months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">The issuing of this card costs <strong>\u20ac31.85 (~$36.25) or \u20ac59.73 ($67.99)<\/strong> if you want the process to be done quickly (the accelerated procedure). It allows them to enter Croatia <strong>one or more times for a period of up to 30 days<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s usually used by people who want to sort out their paperwork (like registering an address and getting a biometric card) before they get the actual visa they originally applied for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"which-croatia-visa-type-is-best-for-digital-nomads\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Which Croatia visa type is best for digital nomads?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Since it was made specifically for digital nomads (and with input from digital nomads), the <strong>digital nomad residency permit is the best choice<\/strong> for anyone looking to work and live in Croatia for more than 3 months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from being tailor-made, this residency permit also doesn\u2019t cut into the time that you\u2019re allowed to spend in the Schengen Area. That\u2019s something you definitely need to pay attention to as it can affect the overall price you pay for a rental.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from the basic amenities, your utilities can <strong>sometimes include cable and internet<\/strong>. The cost of a flat, unlimited internet and cable combo package is between \u20ac30 and \u20ac40 (~$34.15\u2013$45.54).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"expense-3-transportation\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Expense #3: Transportation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Out of all the expenses, transportation will be the <strong>most affordable one<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Croatia has quite well-developed infrastructure, and the towns (especially those on the coast) are well-connected with bus and ferry routes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">With over 1700 km of coastline, more than a 1000 islands, and several dozens of towns inland, having such an extensive public transportation network is quite a feat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Big cities like Zagreb and Zadar have excellent public transportation services. In comparison, around <strong>28.5% of their income is spent on groceries<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Considering how high rent is in some places (we\u2019re looking at you, Dubrovnik), this might seem like a surprising number to some.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, take into account that big tourist hubs like Dubrovnik don\u2019t see a lot of native renters. Although the same can be said for a lot of countries, Croatia has easy but exciting cuisine that\u2019s both distinctive and typically Mediterranean.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Not everyone will like everything Croatia has to offer, but the people have come to appreciate and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiaweek.com\/a-visit-to-a-unique-croatian-island-food-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">even celebrate that<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, the <strong>prices of Croatian dishes vary depending on where and what you\u2019re eating<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">A meal for 2 in a typical, mid-range restaurant will be around \u20ac40 (~$45.52) while a soiree in a high-end restaurant won\u2019t cost under \u20ac100 (~$113.81).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">But not everything is that pricey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">A cappuccino in a coffee shop will cost you \u20ac1.99 (~$2.26), while you\u2019ll be able to get a bottle of Coca-Cola or Pepsi for around \u20ac2.54 (~$2.89).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">If you like to party, you\u2019ll be happy to hear the prices of drinks in bars and clubs are more than decent. Small towns, especially those that kind of die down during low season, won\u2019t have as many amenities to offer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"do-digital-nomads-pay-tax-in-croatia\" class=\"wp-block-heading translation-block\">Do digital nomads pay tax in Croatia?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">One of the major benefits for digital nomads is that they <strong>don\u2019t have to pay taxes in Croatia<\/strong>. Considering that most European countries have laws that demand residents to pay taxes after spending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/1\/183-day-rule.asp#:~:text=Understanding%20the%20183%2DDay%20Rule,-The%20183rd%20day&amp;text=Generally%2C%20this%20means%20that%20if,considering%20someone%20a%20tax%20resident.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 183 days<\/a> in the country, Croatia really went off the beaten path there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">When the Croatian tax and immigration legislation were amended to include digital nomads and make regulations for the new visa, the decision was made that digital nomads <strong>aren\u2019t going to be taxed in Croatia based on their status<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">So, by obtaining the digital nomad residency permit, you\u2019re essentially getting a special status and are<strong> exempt from taxes in Croatia<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, you&#8217;ll probably still have to pay taxes at home (depending on the rules and regulations of your country).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">However, there is <strong>one taxation rule that you will have to pay attention to<\/strong> in Croatia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\">When you obtain a digital nomad visa, you have to go to the police to register your address in order to get a residency permit and a biometric card. Registering your address means showing proof of a rental agreement or a booking. No one mentioned to me that means the contract I provided will automatically get registered in the Tax office and get taxed. So, now, on top of the agreed price for my rental, I also have to pay tax.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block wp-block-paragraph\"><em>According to the official letter I received from the Tax office, \u2018the property income tax is set at 8 rates of 10%\u2019. That comes out to around 7% of my monthly rent. So every month, I pay my rent and I pay 7% of that amount to the Tax office.
